Making assumptions about the “other side” seems to be the source of our problems. Republicans and Democrats are not opposites, and even though it simplifies things, it doesn’t mean it’s true. What seems to frustrate people the most is the other side being unwilling to temporarily abandon their opinions and hear them out. I recommend to everyone to try this. Not only will you make a better case for yourself, you will probably understand the thinking that underlies their argument when you cast aside assumptions.

If you are disgusted by the person being unwilling to see outside of their bubble, take a moment to reflect on whether you are doing it yourself.

We can go on pretending this is just about “liberal” or “conservative” values, but it is more. Our politics shape our world, our lives, and how the human race relates with itself. What qualities should we be encouraging? Discouraging? How can we influence our politics to better reflect these things?

I am desperate for expression of what this is like.

Criticisms that are not so obvious so as to throw them aside as ridiculous. Subtle enough that i must make the conclusions in my mind. Am i paranoid? Is this abuse?

I’ve come to the realization that calling myself fat and incompetent satisfies her and prevents the passive aggressive expression of those thoughts.

It is not a healthy alternative. It feels like vines twisting and growing in my skull, strangling my confidence. I practice self love daily. But this tug of war is emotionally exhausting.
